RICH COSTEY

Biography

Rich Costey’s track record as a mixer and producer reads like a roadmap of some of the biggest rock albums of the past 20 years, a gamut spanning successes both commercial and critical. To limit Costey’s contributions to rock alone, however, would be to reduce him as a musical thinker and tinkerer. His catalog covers an eclectic, celebrated spectrum covering hip-hop, rock, pop, indie, and electronic.

“I was addicted to music at a young age, but it wasn’t until I started seeing Brian Eno’s name on a number of records that I started to wonder about what a producer was.”

At 16 years old, Rich became a DJ at his local radio station. This first brush with studios gave way to a college job at Boston’s Q Division, where he formed a relationship with producer and future collaborator Jon Brion. Heading to New York after college, Rich worked on indie projects until scoring a job as the main engineer at Phillip Glass’ studio—a progressive crucible for Rich to continue sharpening his production and mixing.

“One of the things that was good about working with Phil was that his operation was always really forward-looking—always looking for the newest way to solve some sort of problem.”

Feeling that New York had lost its verve, Rich made the move to Los Angeles at the turn of the century. He reconnected with Jon, working with him on Fiona Apple’s sophomore album When The Pawn… Rick Rubin caught wind of Rich’s work, recruiting him to mix Rage Against the Machine’s Renegades. Rich’s relationship with Rick spawned the early benchmarks of his L.A. Years: Renegades and Rage’s follow-up Live At Grand Olympic Auditorium, Audioslave’s eponymous debut album, and The Mars Volta’s De-Loused In The Comatorium. This work, in turn, spawned further highlights of Rich’s budding discography: Jurassic 5’s Quality Control, Interpol’s Our Love to Admire, Bloc Party’s Silent Alarm, Mastodon’s Blood Mountain, among many others.

Working at a studio in Surrey, England during the production of Mew’s Frengers album, Costey came across the music of Muse and their heady mix of classically influenced melodicism and riffage. A connection with a band in ascent sparked a long-standing relationship beginning with Absolution and marked by multiple number one albums (including most recent release Drones) along a Mercury Prize nomination for 2006’s Black Holes and Revelations.

The diverse balance that formed Rich’s foundation persists in the present. Recent years have seen him work with a diverse array of commercially and critically successful artists, a list including Of Monsters and Men, Boots, Flying Lotus, alt-J, Phantogram, Chvrches, Haim, Vampire Weekend, Major Lazer, Sigur Ros, Zac Brown Band, P!nk, Foster the People, Charli XCX, Arctic Monkeys, Death Cab For Cutie, and Miguel. Costey continues to push boundaries and experiment with technique across a varied client base.
